  • One full hour and thirty minutes of football, friends, and all the things in-between!

SHOW NOTES:

Complimentary comments about Ohio State and Notre Dame.

  • 1:49 – Joey. “It would be cosmic irony if, after everything we talked about at the beginning of the season, Notre Dame and Ohio State ended up playing each other for the National Championship. I would love that. It would be amazing. Ohio State is the team I'm most anxious about in the final four teams. I think we're going to do well against Penn State. I think we could do well against Texas. Ohio State, man. You guys have had a whale of a season. It's been amazing."

  • 2:21 - Jay. “That first half of football was unbelievable. I've never seen them play like that. That is their potential. They can play like that. They also had great coaching. They called the right plays and they're in the right sets, but we've also seen them lay eggs as well. Many times, they play to the level of their competition, and we'll see what happens. I would love it because even if we lost to the National Championship team, at least we would lose to Notre Dame, which I would be okay with. I don't want to lose to Penn State. I don't want to lose to Texas.”

A little bit of wisdom that kept Dr. Jay sane during the Oregon vs Ohio State game.

  • 4:12 – Joey. “I believe it is almost impossible to beat a team twice in a season. I know it happens, but it is so rare. It's so easy for people to be like, we did it once, so we can do it again. It's dangerous when you have a team with that level of talent and coaching with a chip on their shoulder. Look out.”

  • 4:56 - Jay. “You know what's crazy? Lou Holtz said, ‘it's always going to be the last two minutes of the first half and the first two minutes of the second half that dictates the outcome of the game."

  • 5:21 – Joey. “When you're playing a team like Oregon, Ohio State, Notre Dame, the game is over when the other team's plane leaves. None of this playing until the end of regular… no. When their team is on the plane and the little guy is in the front waving the plane down, ready to take off, that's when the game ends. Do not count your eggs before they hatch friends.”

Have a good career? Look the part!

  • 9:05 - Joey. “When Marcus Freeman became the head coach, I looked around and asked if there is a head coach in college football who's more fit than Marcus Freeman? There is something to be said for players that see a coach that maybe can't bench as much as they can, but he's going to give them a run for their money. He’s athletic, energetic, and is really getting in there. Some of our former coaches did not necessarily the model of fitness compared to that, and he is the best thing that ever happened.”

  • 10:40 – Brad. “Gundy is very adamant about physical training. All of his coaches look good. Gundy is in that training facility every day working out. We've got Rob Glass, one of the best strength coaches out there. We have Athlete’s Table here, where scholarship athletes have to eat twice a day, so their meals are monitored, and they eat the right kind of food. They make them sleep a certain number of hours. They wear the blue-light blocker glasses.”

  • 11:49 – Joey. “I feel like Notre Dame was a little late to the table on that, no pun intended. About two years ago, Notre Dame started putting all the players through cooking classes. The reason? They had training table, and they were supposed to come, but some of these guys lived off campus and would cook on their own after a game or practice. Instead, they decided to teach them how to constantly be fueling themselves.”

Allocating our dollars.

  • 26:09 - Joey. “Let's pull it out of football for just a second. This is the discussion that every organization has on the planet. Where do we allocate our dollars? Towards technology? Towards people? Towards retention or recruiting? These are all separate conversations, and we're learning that some schools decided to spend their money on high school players, some decided to spend their money in the transfer portal, and some decided to spend their money with players that were already on their team. We've seen varying results from those three strategies. I don't know which one's right, because we've seen success and failure with all three approaches. It's fascinating to think of these sports really as having the same struggles that many business owners have. Do I pay to recruit? Do I pay to retain? Do I pay for better facility or better tech? Where do I allocate my limited dollars? This is a challenge every leader has.”

  • 27:13 - Jay. “For Ohio State, if they end up winning, they did a combination of all the above, right? They retained the players that they needed to have on that team, and they brought in a couple of key people. It seems like the combination of allocation makes the most sense. That's probably very true in business too.”

  • 27:44 - Joey. “I would agree with that. It's not an all or nothing game. You got to be constantly recruiting, you got to be constantly retaining, and part of retaining is taking care of the people that are already there. You clearly have seen how they've done that.”

Follow the money.

  • 32:35 – Jay. “Last night, I heard there is the potential that private companies or entrepreneurs that have high net worth will purchase programs. It could be the Frito-Lay Ohio State Buckeyes for $700 million that will fund the program for the next 10 years or whatever. There are naming rights for fields, and there could be naming rights as it relates to these programs as well. I would hate that. I'm just putting it out there that it could just, to your point, Joey, about NCAA regulation and having boundaries.”

  • 33:09 - Joey. “Jay, I've been privy to conversations with venture capitalists about this exact topic. Venture capitalists having conversations about which school should we go buy their athletic program? Because if they buy it, they get all the jersey sales and tickets. This is Citizens United, for those of you that follow along in politics, right? When the Supreme Court said that corporations could donate to political campaigns without any type of regulation or limitation, it destroyed the American political system. This was a Supreme Court decision in the last 15 years. The exact same thing is going to happen if the NCAA or the government doesn't step in and say, o. We are absolutely going to see it happen. It's money. It's money. The practical reality is humans left to their own devices when it comes to money, don't make good choices. Regulation, rules, limitations, boundaries, these things are necessary. With each additional dollar, they become more necessary. This is the human way.”

Wager redefined!

  • 48:00 – Jay. “The foundational stat of a great defense is how many points they give up, right? I just don't want the other team scoring more points than mine, so it's all about scoring defense. That is the stat. We decided that we were going to bet who was going to have the best scoring defense in the country. Now, we did not decide whether it was going to be the end of the regular season or the end of the year. I think we just let it roll to the end of the season.”

  • 49:20 - Joey. “Let's go to the data right now. I'm an evidence-based guy. You guys are evidence-based guys. Currently, after the regular season was done, Ohio State had 131 points scored against them. Notre Dame had 163 points scored against them. At the end of the regular season, Jay was winning by 32 points. Now, when we build in the playoffs, we take into account Ohio State's games against Tennessee and Oregon as well as Notre Dame's games against Indiana and Georgia. It is now the case in the playoff games, 38 points have been scored against Ohio state and 27 points have been scored against Notre Dame. Now, just with the two playoff games, Joey is winning by 11 points, which has reduced the overall spread to 20 points total. Jay is still ahead by 20 points. Here's what I would recommend. I think the bet ends when we've played with the same number of games played. We currently have played the same number of games. It would be unfair, for example, if Notre Dame were to lose and Ohio State were to go on, then I get an extra game of points counting against Jay. I think we should end the bet when both teams reach the maximum number of games that they both play.”

  • 51:12 - Jay. “We also didn't define scoring defense because I was thinking points per game, not total points.”

  • 51:45 - Joey. “When you said scoring defense, what I thought you meant is points scored by defensive players, i.e. interceptions and fumbles recovered for touchdown. Thus far in this season, Ohio State has had one interception returned for a touchdown and two fumbles returned for a touchdown for a total of 21 points. Notre Dame, on the other hand, has had five interceptions returned for touchdowns and one fumble returned for a touchdown for a total of 42 points. If we combine both of these bets, we're now at a one-point differential with Notre Dame in the lead. I'm just saying, there's still a chance. Ladies and gentlemen, that's what I thought the bet was. I know that more commonly in the world of college football, when they talk about scoring defense, they talk about points scored against.”

  • 53:08 - Jay. “I'm good with those terms. It'll be through next week and then we'll see what happens.”

  • 53:19 - Joey. “We clarified the bet off air. The person who loses has to come on the show to kick off next season's football discussion, wearing an article of clothing of the other person's team.”

Chiropractic care in the playoffs.

  • 1:05:50 - Joey. “I don't know if you guys saw this story, but I wanted to share it because I know there's a lot of chiropractors listening. During the Notre Dame Georgia game, our kicker Mitch Jeter made three field goals of longer than 45 yards. Now, if you're a fanatical Notre Dame fan like I am, and you've watched all season, you know we've struggled. This is a kid who came to Notre Dame from South Carolina as a graduate transfer. He did an amazing job at South Carolina. I think he missed one field goal in his entire time at South Carolina, right? Amazing kicker. He starts out for us, doing really well, but gets injured. His dad's a chiropractor and is flying up to Notre Dame to do adjustments on this kid. He finally gets back to full speed for the playoffs. I loved that twice during that broadcast, there was a shout out to Mitch Cheater's dad, the chiropractor, and the amazing rehabilitative care he was able to get from chiropractic adjustment. You don't normally hear chiropractors getting shouted out during playoff games, so kudos to the chiropractic nation for positive shout outs.”

Ohio State vs Texas predictions.

  • 1:07:17 - Brad. “Let’s talk a little bit about the lineup that is getting ready to happen the next set of games. We got Texas versus Ohio State and Notre Dame versus Penn State. Give me a predictor of what you think the score will end up being.”

  • 1:08:42 – Jay. “I'll go with 37-31, Ohio State wins it in overtime."

  • 1:09:48 – Joey. “I think Ohio State wins against Texas because your defense is phenomenal. Texas has not played a defense like Ohio State. They are more of a run and gun, let's put points on the board. I do not think they're going to be able to put points on the board the way they have against other teams this year. I think it's going to be close, but I think you're going to win.”

  • 1:10:29 - Brad.“I think the first five minutes of that game will tell a story of who can come out and show the strength. That's a home game for Texas, so it’s going to be tough. It's end of the year, and everybody's trying to win in a big way. It’s going to be in the late 20s or low 30s. I think that there's going to be a surprise at the end, but Ohio State will pull it out. Some crazy touchdown or pass.”

Notre Dame vs Penn State predictions.

  • 1:12:52 - Joey. “First of all, Penn State has a fantastic team. They've had some wins, but where I worry is Penn State has everything to gain and nothing to lose. I don't think they were going to be here. I don't think they had planned to be here as much as they claim they did. If they win, it's an amazing miracle. If they lose, it's a lot of people saying, I can't even believe they made it this far. That's dangerous to play against a team that has that kind of position and status. Notre Dame has an advantage because many of Penn State's games were close. Penn State also has not experienced being down two or three touchdowns. We saw what happened with Georgia. If Notre Dame can be explosive, aggressive and force some turnovers, fumbles or interceptions to turn into points, I'm going with Notre Dame 35-17.”

  • 1:14:37 - Jay. “This is a game that starts at the top. They all do, but this one especially. Freeman's a better coach and they're going to have a better game plan. They're going to shut down the run game and make Drew Allar beat them, which he can't. In the spirit of coaching, I don't think he's developed as well as I thought he would develop when I first saw him play early on. I think this is a 30-10 game. Notre Dame's going to dominate. Maybe it's close in the first half a little bit, but I think Notre Dame's going to pull away in the second half.”

  • 1:19:07 - Brad. “I think Georgia is a better team than the team you played the other night. I think you still would have won, but I just don't think they showed up fully like they have the rest of the season to be where they're at. I think Georgia is a better team than Penn State. If Georgia can bring a little of that magic back, I think you should be able to beat Penn State fairly easy. In this case, you're just the better team and I think you'll win by two touchdowns.”
